Soul Trak's Youth Adventure Cohort: Fall 2024

Anacostia River Exploration

Experience the magic of the Anacostia River with Soul Trak's Youth Adventure Cohort this fall! Designed for dynamic youth ages 11-15, our program runs from September 19 to October 26, 2024, meeting every Thursday from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM. This enriching experience immerses participants in the beauty and significance of the Anacostia River and its surrounding watershed through hands-on activities and exploration.

The Anacostia River is more than just a waterway—it's a vibrant ecosystem and a crucial part of our local environment and history. This program is dedicated to exploring and understanding the river's impact on our community and its natural surroundings. Participants will engage in a series of activities that highlight the river’s ecological importance, its role in local culture, and the conservation efforts needed to protect it.

Program Highlights:

  • Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens: Begin your journey by visiting these lush gardens, home to a diverse range of aquatic plants and wildlife. Learn about the role of wetlands in filtering water and supporting biodiversity.
  • Anacostia Community Museum Hike: Traverse the wooded trails around the museum, discovering the historical and cultural significance of the Anacostia River to the local community and its role in shaping regional heritage.
  • Kingman Island Kayaking: Navigate the waters of Kingman Island, an urban oasis that provides a unique view of the river's natural beauty and offers insights into its ecosystem.
  • Anacostia Park Fishing: Engage in fishing at Anacostia Park, where you'll learn about river health, aquatic species, and the importance of sustainable practices for preserving our waterways.
  • River Expedition - Bladensburg Waterfront to Kingman Island: Challenge yourself with a longer kayaking journey, experiencing the diverse landscapes and understanding the river’s flow and its impact on the environment.
  • Harpers Ferry Camping Trip: Conclude your adventure with a camping trip to Harpers Ferry, where you'll connect with the natural world in a historic setting and reflect on the river’s broader environmental context. We will sleep in tents, go river rafting, and make s’mores!
