Description: Volunteers will help the Anacostia Watershed Society to plant wetland plants (such as bulrush and arrow arum) in the wetlands by Dueling Creek. The Anacostia Watershed Society is restoring the Anacostia River's wetlands to their natural role as filters for pollution and sediment and habitat for a variety of wildlife. Our goal is to restore the Anacostia River to a swimmable and fishable river by 2025 and beyond and restoring our wetlands (once 2,500 acres, now less than 150 acres) is an important piece to achieving a clean and safe Anacostia River for all living in its watershed and for future generations.

Physical Level of Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult

  • This event will likely involve lifting, bending, and walking in some steep and muddy areas. To get to the site, volunteers will walk about half a mile to a mile. Participants will be expected to wear closed-toed shoes for the duration of the event. If you think any of the physical requirements will be problematic, please let us know.

What to Wear/Bring:

  • Gloves (we will also have gloves available for volunteers to use on site)
  • Clothing: All participants should dress appropriately for the weather on the day of the event. We recommend wearing long pants and socks. Please wear clothes you are comfortable getting muddy in.
  • Shoes: Closed-toed shoes are required for this project. We recommend wearing hiking boots, rubber boots, or any closed-toed shoe that you're comfortable getting dirty/muddy. If you own a pair of waders, you're welcome to bring them with you! We'll have some extra boots and waders available on site.
  • Reusable water bottle(s) with water in it (we will not be providing drinking water, so if you think you'll need more than 1 bottle, please bring multiple to keep hydrated)
  • We will provide all other necessary tools and supplies.
