If you’re looking to coordinate a backpacking trip with your friends, but don’t know where to start, join SoulTrak for an informative and empowering adventure into the world of backpacking! This community learning session is tailored for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) groups to learn about what it takes to execute a recreational backpacking trip. "F.U.B.U Backpacking 101" is a comprehensive program that aims to bridge the gap in outdoor representation, providing participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to plan and embark on their own unforgettable backpacking journeys.

This workshop is tailored for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) individuals and communities who are interested in exploring the world of backpacking and outdoor recreation. It welcomes participants of various experience levels, from those completely new to backpacking to those with some outdoor experience. Participants may come from diverse cultural backgrounds and have a shared interest in learning, connecting with nature, and fostering a strong community of like-minded individuals.

Workshop outcomes are designed to align with the goals and aspirations of BIPOC individuals seeking to engage with the outdoors in meaningful ways.

  • Empowered Trip Planning: Participants will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to confidently plan and execute their own backpacking adventures, considering factors like trail selection, difficulty assessment, and itinerary creation.

  • Gear Proficiency: Attendees will become familiar with essential outdoor gear, understanding their purpose, usage, and how to choose gear that aligns with their personal needs and preferences.

  • Outdoor Culinary Skills: Participants will gain insights into backcountry cooking techniques, learning how to prepare nourishing and delicious meals using portable stoves and minimal equipment.

  • Leave No Trace Ethics: Attendees will develop a strong understanding of environmentally responsible outdoor practices, contributing to the preservation of natural spaces and minimizing their impact on the environment.

  • Nature Confidence, Competency, and Empowerment: Through step-by-step demonstrations and interactive activities participants will enhance their self-confidence, communication skills, and competency to make informed decisions in outdoor settings.

  • Community-building to Redefine Outdoor Narratives:  By engaging in the workshop, participants will build a supportive and inclusive community interested in the outdoors. Equipped with the confidence to plan and execute their own backpacking trip, participants will contribute to reshaping the narrative around outdoor representation, challenging stereotypes, and creating a more diverse and inclusive outdoor culture.
